Pertwee Rules!!!

Review Date: November 23, 2009
Reviewer: A. Shapiro, Fl
Pertwee has always been a favorite of mine. His take on the Doctor was utterly unique. The only true action hero Doctor. Loved him then, and love him now. Even with the series resurrected, it seems that the Doctors thus far(Eccleston and Tennant) have lifted elements from Troughton, Baker, and even Hartnell's run, but no one has attempted to lift any elements of Pertwee's portrayal. Wonder why that is? Because only Pertwee can do Pertwee. These episodes showcase his talents brilliantly, and the baddies contained in the stories are typical for his era. This is a must have, not just for fans of the Daleks, but for any Who fan. The series at its very best, by one of the best to ever play the role. Watch with your kids. Watch, and be a kid all over again!
Best colorization to date

FRONTIER IN SPACE - good quality show and good quality DVD.

PLANET OF THE DALEKS - I was honestly floored by the color restoration of Episode 3! It is the Doctor Who Restoration Team's best work to date (all of it is very good). Definitely this box set should be purchase if for nothing else. Episode 3 only existed in B/W for years, and PBS never showed the serial in its entirety for this reason.

The extras were not as good as some prior releases, but the mini-biography of Roger Delgado (the original Master) is very sweet and worth watching. I'm glad that Katy Manning is doing more interviews with the releases. It's just a shame that the Pertwee year stories have been less slower in release than others Doctors (season 11 has barely been touched).
john pertwee is awesome!!

John Pertwee rules. I really enjoy his portrayal of the doctor. These two shows are must haves. You've got the Master and the Daleks. What more could you ask for!! BBC please release more John Pertwee DVDs.

For doctor who fans this is one that should be in your collection, i allways thought the daleks were the best enemy of the doctor, jon pertwee plays the doctor in this one plus the master shows up, what with the daleks and the master the doctor is kept busy out witting his enemys.
Planet of the Daleks missing shows

Review Date: December 15, 2009
Reviewer: Joseph Allen,
Several Years ago I was connacted by the BBC arcives as they found out that I had a copy ( from the late John Nathen-Turner) of the missing shows from planet of the Daleks on VHS. I made a DVD copy and ssent it to England. The vidio was not very good being convention stock, however the audio was good. this with several other copies they had tracked down should allow full restoration of this very good show, infact referanced in Revelation of the daleks when the Doctor made the same gizmo to stop them. Lookiing forward to a clean copy as all you are. Collecting these poor copies including Eps. 1 of Invasion of the Dinosaurs and returning them to the BBC, allows all of us to see them fully restored now. Hope to see the Dinos soon. the audio was great and it explains why they were in that truck at the start of Eps. 2. Good Travels.

Product Description

Something terrible awaits the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) on the surface of the Red Planet in The Waters of Mars, the second 2009 Doctor Who special in the handful of shows that brought Tennant and producer Russell T. Davies's tenure on the venerable UK science fiction series to an end. On one hand, the hour-long story is an unsettling hybrid of horror and science fiction, with the Doctor joining forces with human colonists on Mars to fight a life form that turns its hosts into zombie-esque creatures (younger fans should be forewarned that the infected colonists are quite alarming). But The Waters of Mars is also about a schism that develops within Tennant's Doctor as he approaches the end of his current form (Tennant closed out his run on the series with the two-part special that followed, The End of Time): his knowledge of the fate of the colonists and his inherent need to help others results in a decision to use his powers over time and space, with devastating consequences. The result is one of the most dramatic stories in the long history of Doctor Who, and it's highlighted by powerful turns by Tennant and Lindsay Duncan as the leader of the Martian outpost. Extras are unfortunately limited to an episode of the informative but lightweight Doctor Who Confidential that covers the making of The Waters of Mars, and stands in stark contrast to the supplement-heavy archival Who discs. --Paul Gaita

Product Description

Kicking off with a jam-packed Christmas special and ending with a blockbuster extended closing installment, Doctor Who's fourth season since it was revived is a breathless, exciting one that also boasts some exceptional episodes. The ones in particular to watch out for are the outstanding "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead" doubleheader, the almost-single-location creepfest that is "Midnight," and the trio of "Turn Left," "The Stolen Earth," and "Journey's End" that round off the season. In the midst of those is also one of the very best cliffhangers in Doctor Who's long and glorious history.

This is also the season that introduces Catherine Tate as full-time companion Donna Noble, working alongside David Tennant's Doctor across time and space. And it's--against initial expectations--arguably the best combination since the show returned. There's no hint of romance between the pair, as they instead knuckle down to business, occasionally helped by the likes of Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), and Jack Harkness (John Barrowman). And let's not forget the collection of monsters we meet this time around. The Daleks and Davros are the main attractions, while the return of the Sontarans proves to be a bit of a disappointment. But after viewing the series, chances are you'll be counting shadows around you, and wary of getting on the wrong side of the Ood.

As with most series of Doctor Who, there are one or two uneven episodes and some missteps, but the show is still unmatched at what it does, and even more confident than last time round. That, along with the immense rewatch value, is what makes this a terrific piece of family entertainment.

Product Description

One of the oddest shows ever mounted for mainstream British television, Sapphire & Steel was one of ITV's many short-lived attempts at grabbing the sci-fi cult status of the BBC's Doctor Who. Ex-Man from U.N.C.L.E. David McCallum and ex-Avenger Joanna Lumley play human-looking incarnations of the eponymous substances, mysterious investigators working at the behest of an apparent God of Order and zipping about TARDIS-like to cope with anomalies in the time-stream that manifest as apparent supernatural forces in remote English locales like an isolated farmhouse (Adventure One), a deserted rural railway station (Adventure Two) and a high-rise block of flats (Adventure Three).

McCallum and Lumley play their "medium atomic weights" with blank style and a few touches of baffled humor, not to mention visual flair in the case of Lumley's blue fashions and occasional glowing eyes. But the lengthy serial format, strictly limited guest casts, and claustrophobic confinement to studio sets tend to mean individual serials straggle on with a great deal of repetition, as six- or eight-part stories seem to take forever to get moving and then resolve. Shot on video, with a few strange 1970s effects (evil follow-spots, floating pillows), this remains prime cult material, though it's hard to sit still for more than one episode at a time. --Kim Newman

Product Description

A milestone in the history of the enduring UK sci-fi series Doctor Who is reached with this two-part serial: David Tennant, whose portrayal of the iconic Time Lord is arguably the most popular since the program's launch in 1963, ended his tenure as the Tenth Doctor, along with writer-producer Russell T. Davies, who revived the series to great acclaim in 2003. The End of Time pits the Doctor against his greatest foe, the Master (a terrifically wicked John Simm), as well as the Time Lords themselves (led by Timothy Dalton as an imperious Lord President), who seek to reverse their destruction at the hands of the Doctor at the end of the Time War. The crux of the plot is good old-fashioned adventure, with the Doctor and companion Wilf (Bernard Cribbins) attempting to stay one step ahead of the universe-wide doom the Time Lords hope to unleash, but the real raison d'ĂȘtre for The End of Time is to give Tennant a hearty sendoff for his four years as the Doctor. Davies provides a fond and, at times, quite emotional conclusion for his hero, complete with return engagements by many of his friends and companions (among them Billie Piper's Rose, Freema Agyeman's Martha, and even Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith) before his regeneration into the Eleventh Doctor, the much-discussed Matt Smith. As finales go, The End of Time is solid science fiction from start to finish, and most likely, will leave a few Who fans feeling a bit choked up after Tennant's final scene.

The supplemental features on The End of Time are more plentiful than on most of the Tennant/Who DVD releases, though still not quite on par with the archival disc presentations. Tennant is front and center, naturally, for most of the extras; he's on both commentary tracks, with Catherine Tate (Donna) and director Euros Lyn on part 1 and Davies, the amusing Simm, and Lyn on part 2. Both are exceptionally light and upbeat, as are his video diaries, which cover all of the 2009 special episodes. Then it's off to Comic-Con with Tennant and Davies for a 20-minute capsule of their appearance at the 2008 edition of the pop culture juggernaut, as well as some cute BBC Christmas IDs and a handful of deleted and mostly forgettable scenes. Episodes of the behind-the-scenes series Doctor Who Confidential round out the two-disc set. --Paul Gaita

Product Description

"Remembrance of the Daleks," the final Doctor Who story to feature the titular mutant cyborgs, is a particularly notable adventure for the way it ties the plot into the very first story, "An Unearthly Child," made 25 years before. It is 1963, and the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, arrives in London with new companion Ace (Sophie Aldred), where two Dalek factions are engaged in a deadly search for the Hand of Omega. Ace quickly proves herself adept with high explosives, and while there are references to the history of the show, including some nice in-jokes, the drama is played much straighter than in McCoy's first season as the time traveler. This is Doctor Who with a decent budget; the period setting is surprisingly lavish and there are some fairly intense action sequences. The Daleks remain as menacing as ever, the plotting has an intriguing air of mystery, and McCoy injects some steel into his characterization. Aldred serves an ace as a heroine with attitude (very much post-Sarah Connor from The Terminator), and if this really does prove to be the Daleks' swan song, at least they go out with a bang. --Gary S. Dalkin
